Aren't We All Wizards?
The Bowls That Play Me
My last blog, “I Married A Wizard” got me thinking… Aren’t we all wizards?
“Each of us”, as Merlin might say, “has magic.”
If we can dream it, we can birth it. Just imagine.
I tune into a fellow sound healer friend playing by a lake and I listen. How is he making that sound? I’ve never heard anything like that before. Richard shows me some flat-sided metal bowls and how to get that sound.
“You see” he says. “Usually I play the bowls, but these bowls play me.”
The bowls were given to him long ago. He had no idea where I could find some. Hmmm…
Possibility presents itself, and shortly thereafter, I accept an invitation to speak at the Women’s Economic Forum in Maderai, India. In the very moment I say “yes” to this new adventure, into my head pops this voice, “You’ll find the bowls that play you in India.”
Fast forward to Pondicherry, India. Steps outside our Inn and to my left is a sign ‘Art Gallery’ that calls to both Janet and I. Instead, we decide to follow the road, a short walk to the seaside where a statue of Gandhi, a tribute to peace, beckons. Fragrant oils, scrumptious wares, the sound of the waves to the right; the colors and music on the left.
Next morning, we both agree to make our first stop at the Art Gallery just outside the hotel. Amidst the treasures, art, and cultural objects clustered into the small shop, I find 3 metal bowls on a shelf in the way back-back. I ask the shopkeeper for help as they have nested together, married as one, not budging, holding each other tight. She can’t get them apart so I don’t get to play them right then and there, however, I intuitively know we will make beautiful music and magic together. I buy all three.
She kindly offers to wrap them for me to pick up on my way back to the Inn after we do more shopping and exploring.
While the bowls were lovingly separated and wrapped for my travel back to the US, I couldn’t resist the urge to admire, hold and play them once we returned to the Inn that evening. I cautiously gather the courage to unwrap my new babies for a try and ‘Voila!’… each came to life with a different resonance and beauty. Using the technique Richard had showed me, the magic happens. The bowls play me! All three.
So how do these bowls actually ‘Play Me’ you wonder?
Upon creating the tone with the use of hand-crafted mallets I discovered in another shop, I bring my open mouth to the side of the bowl and I become the instrument. The tones from the bowl enter the unique space of my mouth to create a healing sound that releases energy that comes alive with my essence in a way that I've never experienced before. The bowl makes me sing without me singing. Indeed, the very magic of which Merlin would have spoken.
The largest of the three bowls is my 94-year-old mom’s favorite. We enjoy traveling on the sound together, sliding down waterfalls, being a young child out in the moonlight dancing in the rain. Sometimes, it’s just delicious to bring more pixie innocence and peace into our body and soul.
Are you ready to tune within? To meet yourself within? To rediscover your unique sound and voice as you ride the undulating waves of change?
Say ‘YES’ to sound.
Please also remember how much I love you.
Be in Bliss.
Love, Pamela
