What is Sound Healing?
Did you know that we respond to sound before we even have ears?
Since I was a little girl, I’ve always believed that the world was sung into Being. My earliest memories are skipping along, singing a song inspired by the wonder I saw in the world. Laying on the ground, face up to the sky, making pictures with the clouds. Face down with my bellybutton plugged into the earth watching the teeming miracle of life in every color, shape and form undulate in a sacred dance right before my eyes–grasshoppers, frogs, butterflies, and plants, all in their harmonic dance.
Sound is the most basic of our senses. It’s the first to come into our bodies while in the womb and the last to leave us when we pass away.
Nine years ago, in the middle of the night, I suddenly woke up from a deep sleep hearing a voice say, “You need to do sound healing.” I thought, “What? What’s sound healing?”
“You need to do sound healing,” the voice repeated.
I listened. I had no idea what sound healing even was. So I began to research it and sought out a talented friend with a myriad of musical instruments. We began creating, performing, and exploring our own unique gifts using the instruments and our inner voices.
Music and singing had always been a part of my life. I had never viewed it as a healing modality before. I’ve been singing forever (I swear, I began in utero!) and meditating for almost as long (maybe in utero too!).
In the beginning, there was the word. The word was sound.
At first, I didn’t like the term “Sound Healing” because it inferred that we need something outside of ourselves to heal. However, as I thought more about the idea of Sound Healing I realized that we have everything within us to heal ourselves, and sound is the core.
My breath is the creative flow that connects me to everyone and everything
My beating heart is my inner drum communicating the cadence and rhythmic wisdom of my soul
My hands hold the warmth of my light and my innate power to heal myself
My unique voice is the key to unlock the wisdom known and unknown on this awakened journey home to myself, loving me first, so I can love everyone else
“I don’t believe in this woo-woo stuff.” So I ask, “Do you believe in science?”
As I continued to explore sound as a healing modality, I was delighted to discover that both spiritual teachings and science support the belief that sound frequencies can heal. One such scientific study centers on the impact of sound and music on water.
Our bodies are over 78% water. Dr. Masaru Emoto, the Japanese scientist who revolutionized the idea that our thoughts and intentions impact the physical realm, is one of the most important water researchers the world has known. For over 20 years until he passed away in 2014, he studied the scientific evidence of how the molecular structure in water transforms when it is exposed to human words, thoughts, sounds and intentions.
In a similar way to how sound impacts water, sound frequencies effect us and remain with us on a cellular level, both good and bad. (Read more about Dr. Emoto’s study)
“I can’t sing, be still, or meditate.” So I ask, “Are you breathing?”
As long as there is life, our hearts beat, and we breathe. Each breath is a meditation; therefore, you’ve been meditating your entire life and creating sound with your own unique voice.
No matter what your belief system is or where you are in your life journey, you have everything right here, right now, present in this moment to benefit from the simple beauty that is sound. And there’s no right or wrong way to do it.
I offer you my hands, my beating heart, my voice to take you to a place of peace and balance within and to explore your own unique inner sound.
And I don’t know anyone who couldn’t use a little more balance, bliss, and music in their lives.
